07:30 pm - "We had a pretty good life, didn't we?"
I used to sit on this blanket during picnics and parades.  Not "a blanket like this one"... THIS blanket.  It's covering a dead man in this photo, so I'm guessing it won't be used for any more fun family gatherings.

My mom saw a car accident on I-380 today... chatting with her on facebook, here is what she had to say:

Mom: it was about 4-5 cars in front of me
Mom: and a car came from the other side of the road (North Bound)
Mom: and took the top of that car off as it went down over the edge of the road
Mom: the guy in the car was dead
Me: :( :(
Mom: i covered him up before the cops got there
Mom: 1/2 of his skull and brain matter was all over the road and car
Mary: oh wow
Mom: very sad
Mary: yeah, that is really sad... I'm not sure how I would have handled that
Mom: i didn't want people just gawking at him
Mom: so i got the blanket out and covered him up

(as a side note, she used to work in a hospital so it's not the first time she's seen a dead person before. I, on the other hand, would have FREAKED OUT)

...

I had a really cruddy day today, and I was thinking about ranting and raving about the University and how it's screwed me over on more than one occasion, but I'm not going to do that.  Instead I am going to be glad for what I have.  Tonight I am wearing toe socks, eating brownies and ice cream (that I scooped with my brand new ice cream scoop!), sipping on crystal light through a straw, knitting, and watching TV in my warm, well-furnished living room with my awesome roommate/bff Toast.  That's a lot of small pleasures that a lot of people don't have.

In other news, today is the 2 year anniversary of my Grandpa Humphrey's death.  Suddenly, unexpectedly... we had the whole family together for Christmas (the only time that's happened in years), he had a chance to visit my parents' new house... two weeks later he was complaining of a headache at dinner and a few hours after that he was gone (he had an brain aneurysm if any of you were really wondering).  So it shouldn't really be that much of a surprise that today really sucked.  But it doesn't matter.  You can't really take life for granted.  It's so easy to look at the bad things in life and forget about the good things, but the good things can be taken away too and you have to be careful not to lose them before you even know what you have.

I never got to say goodbye to him, and part of me will hate that forever... but the other part knows that I didn't need to.  He knew I loved him.  I knew he loved me.  We knew what we had.

I think I've been forgetting things like that lately.  But life always sends you reminders about what's really important... and I'm thankful for that, too.

Nope, thank goodness.

4. EVER DROPPED A CELL PHONE?
Anybody who says no to this question is either lying or does not own a cell phone.

16. DO YOU PRANK CALL PEOPLE?:

04:36 pm - resolute resolvent resonant resounding
I'm not a big fan of New Year's resolutions (as I've probably mentioned in this journal before, since it's almost 5 years old), because I'm one of those "resolve to make myself better ALL the time" people. I don't know if those resolutions are always met (in fact, I know they are not), but here's what I've got for winter break:

-Work work work
-Further straighten-out my plans for my remaining time at UI
-Study Spanish (a lot)
-Practice music daily (easy peasy: trumpet, piano, drums... all three at the same time...)
-Make appointments to get poked and prodded (aka go to the dentist and get a physical for work... and also find an opportunity to give blood if possible?)
-Engage in physical activity regularly (especially important since I won't be walking to classes)
-Quit sucking at hanging out with my friends
-Keep the apartment clean
-GET ON A REGULAR SLEEP CYCLE

This semester had some good aspects but also some really bad ones (like my apathy toward school, getting easily stressed out, having trouble sleeping)... and I've been feeling kind of... I don't know... out of my zone lately, if that makes sense (and it probably doesn't). Not feeling entirely myself. We'll see how things go. I'm sure everything will work out, because it always does.

05:36 pm - speaking statistics
So, in reviewing for the one final that I have this week (which is tomorrow night, woo), I realized that I COMPLETELY SKIPPED A CHAPTER in my textbook a few weeks ago. I mean... I'm kind of familiar with it because of the lecture, but I forgot to read it. Umm, oops. Anyway... the class is Foundations of Special Education (which is pretty much the only class I like to talk about, amazingly enough), and the chapter is on communication disorders... ie, speech and language disorders... and thinking about language always kind of amazes me, because there are just SO MANY DERN WORDS out there, yet our brains have the amazing capabilities required to learn and use those words to say exactly what we want... usually... and we can even learn to say it in multiple ways (and in multiple languages!).

But, aside from that, speech itself, in its most basic form, is really amazingly complex. Not even at the "what the words mean" level, but at a basic, "how sounds are made" sort of way. When you have to learn about every little thing that could go wrong with speech development, you realize just how complex speaking really is. My textbook has this quote on just some of what happens when you speak the word "statistics."

The tip of the tongue is lifted from a resting position to an area on the roof of the mouth just behind the upper teeth called the alveolar ridge to produce the "s" sound. The tongue is pressed against the alveolar ridge hard enough to produce constriction, but not so hard as to stop the airflow altogether. As the speaker slowly contracts the muscles of exhalation under precise control, air is passed between the tip of the tongue and the alveolar ridge. Leaving the tongue in the same area, the speaker now presses a little harder to stop the airflow and then quickly releases the contact for the production of the "t" sound. The tongue drops to a neutral position and the vocal folds in the larynx vibrate to produce the vowel "a." The speaker turns off the larynx and lifts the tongue to the alveolar ridge for the next "t," then vibrates the vocal folds for the vowel "i" while the tongue stays in a forward but slightly lowered position. The speaker turns the larynx off again and moves the tongue to the alveolar ridge yet again to produce the controlled constriction for the next "s," followed by increased pressure to stop the air flow and release it for the "t." The larynx is turned on one more time and the tongue lowered to a neutral position for the "i," and then turned off as the tongue arches to the back of the mouth where it contacts the velum, or fleshy part of the roof of the mouth, for the "k." Finally, the tongue tip darts to the alveolar ridge for the production of the final "s" sound. All of this occurs in the production of one word!

So, yeah. Whoever thinks that being human isn't the coolest thing ever clearly hasn't thought about it enough.

11:17 pm - this little village is all we need
From an official email that was sent out to students of the arts today:

During the winter break the orchestra, band, and many of the school’s studios and ensembles will move to the north end of the Museum of Art. Modular units (trailers) will fill the parking lot just west of the theatre building; they will house additional studios and offices. Some classes and ensembles will remain where they are: Clinton Street, Lynn Street and some of the churches will supplement the Museum and trailers. The new facilities in the Museum are quite lovely and will provide a good home for the school. Acoustics, though, will still be a challenge, so we will need your continuing patience.

We expect to be in these temporary facilities for about a year – perhaps less, if we’re lucky. Planning has begun for a “Music Village” that will house most of the school’s operations until a permanent facility is complete. Area heads and other faculty members will be invited to attend a charrette on Monday, December 15, and to offer ideas for the Village.

A Music Village?  Really?  How quaint!

07:08 pm - here's something cool for y'all!
So, this might be my inner nerd sneaking out, but I just got the coolest birthday present ever. (Now, I know what you're thinking: "Inner nerd? Mary's a complete nerd anyway!" Well, unbeknown to you... hiding beneath my nerdy exterior is an ever NERDIER core.  It's so nerdy it's sick.)

It is a 1957(we think?) LP record of "the State University of Iowa Band."  Framed.  SO COOL!  You don't even understand how happy I am with this.  There I was, not even knowing it existed, but now that it's here, I'm not sure how I ever lived without it.

No, you don't understand.  I EMAILED KASTENS about it, that is now NERDY I am and how so very AMAZED I was by this record.

But anyway, this is what it looks like (on the outside):

And here is what it says (because I know you all are DYING to know):

IT WAS A SIGNIFICANT DAY in the fall of 1855 when three professors rode a stagecoach into Iowa City, pried open the doors of an abandoned building and started the State University of Iowa.

Today, more than a century later, the institution that sprouted from such humble beginnings is recognized from coast to coast as one of America's finest educational facilities.  As the university's fame spreads, so soars the reputation of its band, which has thrilled thousands in appearances throughout the nation.  Millions more who have never seen the band in person know it through the medium of national television.

As a mirror of the university held up for scrutiny by the country at large, the University of Iowa Band has performed impressively.  The organization represents a school of more than 10,500 students.  Spread over the 700-acre campus are some 60 buildings housing the Colleges of Law, Engineering, Business Administration, Medicine, Education, Dentistry, Nursing, Liberal Arts, Pharmacy and the Graduate College.  Included in the College of Liberal Arts are Schools of Journalism, Social Work, Religion and Fine Arts.

The State University of Iowa March Band, organized in 1881 and the oldest musical organization in Iowa, contains 120 marchers and 14 alternates.  The personnel are all male except for coed twirlers.  Director is Frederick C. Ebbs, who came to Iowa in 1954.  An exponent of the more spectacular, flashier school of bandmanship, Ebbs has tossed out the traditional military mannerisms of the marching band and has instituted performances on a snappy, modern theme that has taken audiences by storm wherever the organization has appeared.

Ebbs, who obtained his college musical training at Baldwin-Wallace in Ohio, runs the Iowa marching band like a musical drill sergeant and with the organizational drive of a top-grade football coach.

As a result, the Iowa band's versatility in marching, dancing, singing and playing has gained it national acclaim.  During the halftime presentation at the Rose Bowl on January 1, 1957, band leader Horace Heidt called the Iowa band "a mighty impressive combination of Fred Astaire and Harry James - and that's an unbeatable combination."

More recently, Meredith (Music Man) Willson said: "The Iowa Band is the finest university band I have ever seen."

Believing that a snappy, yet smoothly-executed program is as essential as precision marching to a "spectacular" halftime show, Frederick Ebbs builds his formations around special arrangements of the blues, popular songs, Broadway hits and the old standards.

But regardless of how colorful a band may appear, or how well-organized its march routines, it cannot go any further than its musicianship will take it.  In this department, as the recording will attest, the Iowa band is exceptionally well-qualified.

Beginning with Meredith Willson's Iowa Fight Song, right on through the beloved Stars and Stripes Forever, the State University of Iowa Band here presents its musical credentials in an extremely impressive manner.

Tribute is also paid to Iowa's own Karl King, famed band conductor and composer of many, many fine marches adn selections for band.  In keeping with the Iowa theme, Director Ebbs has included King's Hawkeye Glory March and Iowa Centennial March, along with the Goldman Band March.

Band music at its finest - big, full-bodied, instrumentially first-rate.  This is the Iowa Band - reflecting the proud spirit of one of America's great state universities.

-Jim Gallagher

This is FANTASTIC.

11:02 am - thanksgiving post
Well, here's one for the records, since the rest of the internet sucks.

This thanksgiving, I did things besides eat food... like... walk my parents' dog for about 4 miles, teach my 5-year-old cousin Tobey about math, walk in on several sex-related conversations being held by my aunts and uncles (apparently I am getting old enough for them not to be embarrassed about this anymore)... be the only girl to play catch outside with the boys... and fall in love with a 10-month-old boy who also happens to be related to me.  Awkward.  No, but really.  He's probably like the cutest thing I've ever seen (and I'm pretty sure I've said this about ALL of my cousins at that age, but this time I mean it!)

OH, and it was my brother's 19th birthday so of course there was a bit of celebrating in that department.

Also, my family doesn't blow.  I love them a lot, actually, and always look forward to things like thanksgiving and Christmas because those are really the only times when I get to see them all.

So, take that, internet.  It's not always about eating food and complaining about the people you're supposed to love.

12:30 am - gobble gobble
I've got two things for today:

HAPPY THANKSGIVING...
 AND...

These are both shamelessly stolen from the internet, but the sentiment is there.  I might have a "things I'm thankful" blog later... if I have time... mostly I have been concerning myself with writing in my personal journal and trying to live life more and document it less (since the time taken to document takes away from the living-and-enjoying-time).  We'll see how it goes, though.  I wish you all a happy Turkey Day.  May you consume massive amounts of food and are surrounded by people you love.

02:10 pm
I think it finally just hit me that this Saturday is going to be my last game at Kinnick as a member of the Hawkeye Marching Band.  I mean, I'd love to do it next year, but I really think that I can't... I need to focus on school (for once) and, you know, graduate sometime.  And 4 years in the HMB is enough... but it's still sad to say goodbye to the one connection to a social life that I've had throughout college.

It doesn't help that I finally picked up my HMB CD today and have been reminiscing about past shows while I get my shit done this afternoon.  AHH!

01:36 pm - My birthday's in November? Since when???
It has been brought to my attention that today is the 12th of November... where the last week went, I'm not really sure, but regardless of that random titbit (that's for you Mikey), this means that MY BIRTHDAY IS IN LESS THAN THREE WEEKS.  (There were a lot of commas in that sentence.)  How did this happen?  It seems like October and November always fly by (it's true - they're probably my favorite months, and I always find somebody to distract me around this time of year, so that might have something to do with it).  So, the question arises: what should I do for my 22nd birthday?

The problem is that it's on a Sunday, and it's right at the end of Thanksgiving break.  My brother's birthday is on Thanksgiving, so we were thinking of maybe doing something together, but who knows.  Being able to legally get into the bars is kind of a big milestone when you're a college freshman, but neither of us is really into the whole party scene.  And I'm just old balls.  But not really.  I think in my mind I've been 22 for a while.  If that makes sense (and it probably doesn't).  21 just seems lame to me.  Strange, I know.

Anyway... should there be any sort of festive merry-making?  And if so, when? I suppose we could wait until the NEXT weekend, to ensure that everyone is in town and that people don't have to worry too much about school... but it will be cold... and not actually on my/Dan's birthday.

OH! And another dilemma is that Mike is going to be here on the 2nd, and probably won't be here for very long.  Possibly just on weekdays.  And Alex has been calling me, wondering when my party's going to be.  I don't have an answer so I haven't called her back (because I'm awesome like that).  Maybe I should just tell her to come when Mikey is going to be here, because really those two are probably more important to me than having a big huge party anyway.  AHHHH!!! HELP!!!

Or maybe I'll just go crazy and be drunk for about 2 weeks straight.  Because, you know, that's how I roll (not).  But really... maybe a lil dinner or something on my actual birthday, then something with Those I Hold Dear (aka Mike, Alex, Toast, Dan, Bridget, Skouby if I can make her, and possibly a couple of others) during the week, and something at the bars the next weekend.  Or maybe birthdays aren't really that big of a deal to me and I don't know what all the fuss is about, but I feel like I should take advantage of the fact that people are going to give me attention anyway.

Anyway.  Input would be appreciated.  And presents, but only if you want to give them to me.  Or even just a couple of dollars, because I'm broke as a joke (so po' fo sho, you know). Help a sista out.

...NO, the point of this wasn't to ask for your money.  It was to get YOU to TELL ME how you'd like to party with me, if you desire to do so.  Okay, I'm done rambling.  Laters.
